During this time of escaping the worldly turmoil, although they were in tranquility, they would occasionally feel bored. However, it was precisely in this boredom that the ancients often engaged in elegant activities to enrich their inner world and give profound meaning to life. In “Paying Tribute to Zhuangzi”. “Paying Tribute to Zhuangzi” can mean visiting friends whose thoughts are in tune with those of Zhuangzi. In ancient times, like – minded hermits would visit and communicate with each other. For example, the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove in the Wei and Jin dynasties often gathered in the bamboo grove. They drank wine, composed poems, and discussed profound theories. This kind of interaction, similar to “Paying Tribute to Zhuangzi”, represented a spiritual pursuit of transcending the mundane world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Liu Chenweng (\u5218\u8fb0\u7fc1) resigned from his official position and went into seclusion in the Song Dynasty, he wrote the ci – poem “Jinl\u00fcqu<\/em>” (\u300a\u91d1\u7f15\u66f2\u300b): “I’ve heard that peaches can be brewed into wine. I’ll brew thousands of shi (“shi” was a unit of volume in ancient China, and it could also be used to measure weight. Here, “thousands of shi” is used to depict a scenario of brewing a large amount of wine and indulging in intoxication.) of peaches to get thoroughly drunk. Spring has an end, but the wine jars seem bottomless.” The ancients would use peach blossoms or peaches to make wine, which was a poetic craft. For instance, Lu You mentioned in the fifth poem of “Miscellaneous Poems on Living in the Village in Late Spring<\/em>” (\u300a\u6625\u665a\u6751\u5c45\u6742\u8d4b\u7edd\u53e5\u300b), “Filling the cup from the wine jar with floating foam to ‘water’ the books, lying across the bed after a meal, dreaming like Zhuangzi dreaming of a butterfly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means spraying cinnabar ink from the mouth. Zhang Yanyuan in the Tang Dynasty said, “The way ancient people painted clouds was not yet perfect. If one could moisten the silk fabric, sprinkle some light powder, and blow it with the mouth, it was called ‘blowing clouds’. For hermits, ‘spraying ink’ often aimed to express a sense of naturalness, simplicity, and artistic conception. They didn’t need to be deliberate but convey their inner understanding and emotions towards nature through brushstrokes and ink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lin Youlin in the Ming Dynasty recorded in “The Stone Compendium of the Suyuan Garden<\/em>” (\u6797\u6709\u9e9f,\u300a\u7d20\u56ed\u77f3\u8c31\u300b): “There was a large rock in the eastern area where Tao Yuanming lived. Tao Yuanming often got drunk and slept on it, and named it the Sobering Stone.” The Sobering Stone symbolizes that after being intoxicated by nature or in a confused state of pondering life, they regain a clear – headed awareness and view everything from a more detached perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The virtuous purify their minds and savor the imagery. When it comes to mountains and waters, they have substance and spiritual charm…” “Savoring the imagery” means experiencing and appreciating the images of things. Following this concept, hermits, in their secluded lives, use a pure and calm state of mind to savor the spiritual charm of natural objects, and understand the mysteries of the universe and the true meaning of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to “Book of Jin<\/em>“, the litterateur Sun Chu (\u5b59\u695a) , who intended to live in seclusion, told his bosom friend Wang Ji (\u738b\u6d4e) that he “wanted to rest his head on stones and rinse his mouth with flowing water”, but by mistake, he said “rinse his mouth with stones and rest his head on flowing water”. Wang Ji asked how one could rest their head on flowing water and rinse their mouth with stones. Sun Chu replied that he wanted to rest his head on the flowing water to wash his ears, and rinse his mouth with stones to sharpen his teeth. Rinsing one’s mouth with stones, so to speak, was believed to have a sharp mind. Any way, the plus size Hanfu<\/a> in this picture indeed showcases his unusual aesthetic preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People engaged in elegant pursuits such as calligraphy, painting, tea – tasting, and poetry – writing to cultivate their minds and refine their sentiments. These activities not only enriched their inner worlds but also, to some extent, reflected the profound understanding and pursuit of life by the ancients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a proper family atmosphere, some people couldn’t bear to work with their corrupt colleagues due to their personalities. Thirdly, it could be the love for nature and rural life. Only those who truly yearned for a free and leisurely life could endure long – term isolation from others and focus on self – improvement.
