Some wore elaborate hairstyles adorned with luxurious hairpins, perfectly blending feminine beauty with imperial authority. Others, like Chen Jin, opted for a more understated approach\u2014dressed in a round-collared hanfu robe<\/a> with a\u00a0futou\u00a0(\u5e5e\u5934, a traditional headpiece), exuding an aura of quiet yet undeniable power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, Wu Zetian\u2019s appearance was often described with the phrase “square forehead and broad jaw”<\/strong>\u00a0(\u65b9\u989d\u5e7f\u9890). According to The New Book of Tang<\/em>\u00a0(\u300a\u65b0\u5510\u4e66\u00b7\u8bf8\u5e1d\u516c\u4e3b\u4f20\u300b), it was recorded: \u201cThe princess Taiping had a square forehead and broad jaw, and was highly strategic in nature. The empress Wu Zetian often said, \u2018She resembles me.\u2019\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0This description suggests a high forehead and wide cheeks. In extreme cases, the hairline at the temples was even shaped into sharp angles, creating a distinctive look. Interestingly, this facial structure somewhat resembles what we now call a \u201csquare-round face.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wu Zetian\u2019s image has always been somewhat of a mystery. Most depictions of her in later generations follow the styles shown in the right image\u2014wearing a cross-collared hanfu<\/a> or round-collared hanfu, with the latter being a signature style of the Tang dynasty. She is often portrayed wearing a fangxin quling (\u65b9\u5fc3\u66f2\u9886, a ceremonial collar) and a di guan (\u7fdf\u51a0, a crown adorned with pheasant feathers). Meanwhile, in the left image, The Portrait of Empress Wu’s Entourage (\u300a\u6b66\u540e\u4ece\u884c\u56fe\u300b), she is shown in a yishang-style ceremonial robe and a hu mao (\u80e1\u5e3d, a hat of nomadic origin that was popular in the Tang dynasty during periods of cultural exchange). However, since the di guan was traditionally worn by imperial consorts and the hu mao was not considered formal attire, these representations may not fully reflect her actual imperial wardrobe. Additionally, historical depictions of past figures often incorporated contemporary fashion elements, leading to some discrepancies. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most widely accepted depiction of Wu Zetian\u2019s formal imperial hanfu<\/a> is likely based on Yan Liben\u2019s(\u960e\u7acb\u672c) Portraits of Successive Emperors (\u5386\u4ee3\u5e1d\u738b\u50cf), which reflects Tang dynasty conventions. As an emperor, she would have worn the mianfu (\u5195\u670d, imperial ceremonial robe) along with a mian guan (\u5195\u51a0, an emperor’s ceremonial crown). However, historical dramas have rarely recreated this full attire, often featuring the crown but omitting the proper robe. That said, the mianfu was reserved for very specific occasions\u2014such as the heavenly sacrifice ceremony (\u90ca\u796d, held once every three years), grand ancestral rites (\u660e\u5802\u5927\u7940, twice every three years), the New Year\u2019s Day court assembly (annually), and rare events like assuming an honorific title or conferring titles upon the empress or crown prince. Consequently, even in Wu Zetian\u2019s lifetime, this attire was only worn a handful of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of her beauty formulas were recorded and passed down among the people. However, after ascending the throne, she was already in her later years. At this stage, rather than relying on youthful beauty, she commanded authority through sheer personal charisma and presence. This is why many viewers believe that actresses like Chen Jin<\/strong> and L\u00fc Zhong<\/strong> best captured Wu Zetian\u2019s image\u2014exuding an effortless, regal presence that radiates power without the need for elaborate styling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clothing styles were also exquisite\u2014particularly low-cut necklines<\/strong>, fan-shaped collars<\/strong>, and striped skirts with alternating narrow bands of color<\/strong>, which created a flowing, elegant effect as women moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For formal occasions, a round-collared robe embroidered with dragon motifs would have been a suitable choice. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this period, beizi\u00a0(\u8919\u5b50) and banbi\u00a0(\u534a\u81c2) were also commonly worn, often made from richly woven brocade fabrics. For example, in Liu Shishi\u2019s portrayal of Ye Ping\u2019an, her sleeveless low-necked vest and half-sleeves are classic styles frequently seen in historical dramas, including the recent series Palm (\u638c\u5fc3). \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
