The Qin Dynasty \u2013 The Rise of Color Cosmetics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the Qin, colorful makeup was rare due to both cultural views and limited techniques in producing cosmetics. This marked the beginning of a much more colorful and expressive era of beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2162. Han Dynasty \u2013 The \u201cLazy Beauty Look\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Makeup in the Han Dynasty was known for its elegance and simplicity. Wei, Jin &amp; Northern\u2013Southern Dynasties \u2013 The \u201cHalf-Face Look\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During this era of constant upheaval and cultural blending, beauty standards became bold and experimental, giving rise to many unusual styles such as the <em>Half-Face Look<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(\u5f90\u5983\u534a\u9762\u5986), the <em>Morning Glow Look<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(\u6653\u971e\u5986), the <em>Yellow-Brow Look<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(\u9ec4\u7709\u58a8\u5986), and even Plum Flower Look (\u6885\u82b1\u5986).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"175\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silkdivas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-95.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7002\" style=\"width:217px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most striking examples was the <em>Half-Face Look<\/em>&nbsp;of Consort Xu, wife of Emperor Yuan of the Liang Dynasty. Because the emperor had <strong>lost sight in one eye <\/strong>and their <strong>relationship was strained<\/strong>, she would deliberately <strong>apply makeup to only half her face whenever she met him\u2014an act both artistic and defiant.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>And I have to say, she is really a ruthless person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2165. Wei, Jin &amp; Northern\u2013Southern Dynasties \u2013 The \u201cForehead Yellow\u201d Look<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most iconic styles of this period was the <em>Forehead Yellow<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.silkdivas.com\/\">hanfu<\/a> makeup, which many people today recognize from Liu Yifei\u2019s portrayal of Mulan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The famous poem <em>Ballad of Mulan<\/em>&nbsp;even describes: \u201cShe fixes her hair by the window, facing the mirror, applies the forehead yellow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The style was deeply influenced by Buddhism, which was flourishing at the time. Since the Buddha\u2019s face was often depicted in a golden hue, women began imitating this by tinting their foreheads or eyebrows yellow. This gave rise to looks like the <em>Yellow Brow<\/em>&nbsp;and the <em>Forehead Yellow<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"174\" height=\"182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silkdivas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-97.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7004\" style=\"width:210px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>How did the \u201cForehead Yellow Look\u201d trend emerge in the Southern and Northern Dynasties? It tied to the popularity of Buddhism at the time. Buddhism influenced not just literature, music, and sculpture, but also the era\u2019s beauty standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Since the Buddha was often depicted with a golden face, women began adding yellow accents to their makeup<\/strong>: dyeing their eyebrow hairs yellow, painting their foreheads yellow, and creating looks like \u201cyellow eyebrow and black makeup\u201d or simply \u201cyellow makeup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"553\" height=\"262\" data-id=\"6936\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silkdivas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6936\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process typically started with a white base made of lead powder, then rouge applied to the cheeks. The yellow pigment could cover the entire forehead or just half, softly blended upward into the hairline\u2014<strong>similar to how Mulan\u2019s look in the movie only colored part of her forehead<\/strong>.
